The popular web series “The Guild” is back in the comic pages again with the first of several one-shot issues. “The Guild: Vork” was released by Dark Horse this week, and if you are a fan of the show, it is a must read.

Co-written by Felicia Day and Jeff Lewis, this story shows some of Vork’s life outside of the game. With Day being the creator of the series, and Lewis being the actor who plays Vork, they were a great choice for the writing team. They were able to capture the character perfectly, both inside and outside the game.

It is nice to finally get some insight into “Herman” in the real world. Seeing his interaction with his grandfather really helps fans understand more about his character and attitude. It was hilarious to see the scams that both were running on the public, and then the ones that Grandpa ran on Vork. It is easy to see where Vork gets some of his personality.

This story also shows us some of the early days of The Knights of Good. In the comic he definitely shows the same controlling attitude that he has in the series. Gamers will appreciate the in-game sequences. As is always apparent in the show, the in-game experiences of the characters are ones to which most players can relate. I’m sure many of us have run into players like Vork.

The art is nice, particularly the in-game panels. However, the best panel in the game is when Vork is trying to play multiple characters at once and is looking at all the different screens. The only criticism I have is that in some panels, I don’t think that Vork looks enough like Lewis, but this often happens in this type of comic.

I highly recommend this comic for fans of “The Guild” and gamers in general. If you are a gamer and not familiar with the series, visit their website at watchtheguild.com. Also, if you did not read it, check out the three-issue series “The Guild” that Dark Horse published earlier this year. You can still get the individual issues, and the issues have been collected into a trade paperback as well.

Future one-shot comics will be released featuring all of the characters. Next up is Tinkerballa, and that issue is due to be released in March. If the future issues are as good as the previous ones, fans will want to collect them all.
