In my last review of this comic I remember being extremely surprised as to how much I liked it. For initially I wasn’t sure if I was the audience for this comic series. Lo and behold this book is turning into one great science fiction story with glorious hints of horror in it. In all the events happening to Alan in last issue being that he had cancer and instead he finds out has something completely different. In this issue you get your answers as to what’s going on with his “cancer” and also get further into what the larger tapestry this series is weaving. So read on and see what this series holds for us in Malignant Man #2!

This book is definitely playing with a lot of genuinely fascinating concepts. For what Alan finds he has in his head is called a Malignant which gives him these newly found powers. This issue explains further as to how it works. I loved how the book explains it to you and yet Alan is still absolutely baffled until it all just kicks in. Credit to James Wan and Michael Alan Nelson for that. He’s such a human protagonist in the fact that he reacts as well really a normal person would react. If you were dying and suddenly you’re being chased by these guys and now these powers have kicked in? Even when he gets the full explanation he’s still unsure of how it’s all going to work out and is still understandably freaked out.

The art on this book by Piotr Kowalski is just getting stronger by the issue. You can tell the fun he is having with these characters. From how the Malignant look to the weapon designs are excellent. I still find his style to be perfect for this book. For I think the grounded nature of the storytelling works to his advantage of this story. For yes you have all these wild and different things going on but this book has at it’s core a very human character who’s learning along with you just what in the world is going on. The reveal of the creature that makes Alan what he is isn’t the biggest reveal. There’s much more than that in this issue. You get to find out further as to who in the world is after Alan, Sarah who rescued him initially, and a new character introduced being Dr. Ezra who figures further into the Malignant part of the series. Your story gets knocked full steam ahead with this issue.

I cannot recommend this series enough. You’re talking to a guy who really wouldn’t have touched this book initially just hearing the Saw connection. Now I’m finding myself fascinated by this story and keep wondering how  this story is going to play out. For there’s two more issues left to go and I know it’ll just get more intense from here. I can’t wait to read the next issue of Malignant Man.
