I have to say in my time of reading Irredeemable its been quite the adventure. I feel like I’ve taken a journey with this title just seeing where it’s going to go. This issue in particular this series took a turn for me. Mark Waid in this title has done a lot with it in playing off the Plutonian as this truly brutal villain with no remorse. I definitely appreciate his take on this character and this issue is where it’s definitely starting to click with me. As you read through this review you’ll get to see why in this issue the series started to truly impress me.
The first page of this book and you can’t help but love it to death when you hear the name Xotan the All-Being, Architect and Creator of All Reality declaring himself God. The response from the Plutonian, “I’m an Athiest.” and that my friends is when I declared Mark Waid awesome. I’m not kidding that entire scene got me loving this issue. For the big part of this issue is the fact that the Plutonian is gathering his group to help break out of the prison. This is definitely one motley crew he’s putting together. Considering how he talks about his crew it looks like they’re his own red shirt squadron. The Plutonian is delightful in just how he acts about all this and I say definitely between Peter Krause and Diego Barretto dud a stellar job on the art in this issue. Peter Krause on those pages with Xotan are impressive. Just that evil smile made me laugh and cringe all at the same time.
There’s also another development going on that’s something I’m not as familiar with a character named Kaidan being imprisoned by Survivor with the corpse of his dead brother watching her at all times. The flashback was interesting in seeing how she got to this point. The corpse being her guard is twisted yet it lends a creepy edge to this whole situation. She manages to get something out of this that no one could entirely expect. I found that interesting and I’m going to be curious in seeing how this part of the story plays out in later issues.
I’ll have to say this is developing in ways I couldn’t imagine and I find myself getting more absorbed in how the plot is coming along. I will have to say Irredeemable is becoming a stronger book for me month after month as I read it. I think as you read through this you appreciate the story and characters of this series. Though I’d have to say if you’re a new reader outside of the Survivor story in the middle of the book you really won’t be lost. You could for the most part pick up this issue and figure out the basic tenets of how this world works and enjoy it immensely. No I’m not saying that because I enjoyed the Xotan pages though that didn’t hurt. Definitely highly recommended.
