In following up from the last issue Max Damage continues dealing with the town of Coalville and working with a man named Whelan to help him work on his adventure to try and be a hero. A twist came about that was absolutely brutal that you can see things going either way. I have to say in this issue Mark Waid didn’t start this off with a whimper but with a bang. You’re dropped right into a riot scene in the town of Coalville. I love the way Waid plays with the villains in this series and even Max Damage is hard to figure out that though he’s the good guy he’s definitely not exactly a nice person. He’s nicely set in shades of gray. This is going to be an unusual style of review for me since really this is definitely one brutal issue.
Threads from last issue with the villains invading the stadium is explained further as to what was going on with that story. For my word there are some sequences in here that are creepy and quite brutal which I can appreciate immensely. I remember in the last issue saying I liked Marcio Takara’s work on this comic and wow this was just mind blowing work. The entire issue from start to finish was non stop impressive work. For there’s some scenes that have genuine tension to it and other sequences that made me absolutely cringe since I just didn’t see them coming. Waid definitely hits you with more than a few curve balls in this issue alone and I couldn’t help but be on the edge of my comic reading seat at times.
I think that’s the thing I’m enjoying about Incorruptible is it definitely has no pacing issues. It’s one of those books that just when you think a bit of hope is potentially coming along for a character it won’t hesitate to take it away. Now with the twist that’s happened with Whelan it’s put Max Damage’s closest ally in the force Louis Armdale wondering just what in the world he got involved with. While the subplot with the Plutonian’s girlfriend Alana Patel heats up and Waid doesn’t hesitate in pushing the creepy o’meter up to epic scales with them. Sometimes when you’re not afraid to push that factor up 1,000 notches it makes whatever happens to them later seem all the sweeter.
As I keep going through this comic I can’t help but enjoy the twists and turns that go through this series. In just two issues I’ve gotten quite hooked into this world. Even if you’re a new reader it’s actually even more friendly than the last issue since it explains a lot of what’s happening so far. It even gets further into how Max Damage’s powers work and just how bad of shape the town Coalville is in. I now can’t help but say I’m preferring this title further than Irredeemable though both books are becoming more anticipated to me in my eyes. Give this issue a look for between this issue and the last this series is just starting to blow my mind and I love it.
