This November, Boom! introduced a new series called 7 Warriors from the creative team Michaël Le Galli and Francis Manapul. The story takes us through a city who’s army gets overrun and must defend itself from the upcoming battle with a host of hired foreign barbarians. Queen Tsin’inan must save her son, Prince Aksamon, by cherry picking seven (7) warriors to escort him in secret to safety where he may wed.

At first glance, the art by Francis Manapul could have been presented in a better fashion. Literally the talk bubbles were way over the size needed, thus making it hard to see different panels and understand what was going on. 10 pages in, I’m a bit more used to it and begin enjoying the comic.

Overall, 7 Warriors is a great start to an adventurous mystery…think Indiana Jones with 7 female warriors. The action begins almost instantly once their journey begins, and we’re given two intersting aspects: Queen Tsin’inan drugs the warriors with an elixer, and leads on to be hiding something of importance from what she communicated to the 7 Sarmatian warriors either about the path they are taking or what awaits them.

Tanais – the leader
Kobyak – bow, sister-wife to Tanais
Yevan – daggers
Belyaka – feared warrior
Makosh – brutal strength
Yaga – bold
Targitai – it wasn’t explained, but she’s more of the delegate of the group

We’re left from issue #1 with the group facing the loss of one of the Sarmatian warriors, and escaping a near death trap in the tunnels of their quest. Despite the qwerky layout, Boom!’s issue #2 should be one hell of a ride!
