On December 14th, Joe Simon, another legendary figure in the comics industry passed away at 98 years old. He is best known as the Co-creator of Captain America with Jack Kirby, during their time at Timely Comics better known as Marvel Comics. After his time at Timely he went on to work for National Comics, also known as DC Comics, and continued working with Jack Kirby creating characters such as, The Newsboy Legion, The Boy Commandos, and Manhunter. During their time as a team they also created the character, The Fighting American as well as working on many other comics including, Black Magic and Young Love as well as working for Archie Comics creating, The Fly and updating The Shield for them.
Over time Joe Simon and Jack Kirby split and Simon went on to create, Brother Power, the Geek and Prez for DC Comics in the 60′s and eventually he had left the comics industry by the late 70′s. As time went on he did try to grab the copyright back from Marvel in the 60′s and another attempt back in 1999 both to no avail but through that he started making a return towards comics. Joe Simon wrote a biography/history called The Comic Book Makers with his son Jim Simon. Along with that he licensed out the characters he still owned such as The Fighting American to other companies and released a second autobiography titled My Life in Comics.
In my own thoughts, Joe Simon was a true legend in this industry just for being one part of the duo that gave us Captain America. We have much to thank for that and his other creations over the years. Within this article alone I’ve only glossed over his accomplishments. From myself and everyone here at Soentertain.me we give our condolences to Joe Simon‘s family and friends.
